okay!!!! im bored so heres my thoughts on all the books ive read (or finished reading) since the start of summer

all of murder most unladylike 5/5 its a middle grade series (9 books) about two girls in the ninteen thirties who go to boarding school together and solve murder. its so funny and i really like the historical perspective in it too. i read it originally when it was coming out but i decided to look at it again (can't remember the exact reason why but anyway). soooo fun and pretty clever too

monk and robot duology by becky chambers about 4.5-4.75/5 very interesting world building im not sure i fully understood it so im going to reread but i think its speculative fiction about a post technological world but a robot decides to visit and becomes friends with a monk

all of the locked tomb series. twice. 5/5. i feel i do not have to explain this everyone read it Now

priory of the orange tree 5/5 this is my fourth read through i'm currently on my second read of a day of fallen night (the prequel) and !!!! the prose !!! the world building !!! the characters. i kinda hate that very few people like niclays i love niclays he's so funny to me and a complete cunt

all of nevermoor. twice 5/5. its 223 days to the fourth book coming out and in the hiatus ive managed to write like 19% i think of all fic for it on ao3. so yk. i like it a normal amount its like its very fun middle grade series (im going into my junior honours year of uni so my summer reading was v self indulgent lmao) about a girl who is rescued from death at the last minute and has to compete to get into a specific society so she won't get deported and the world building is sooo good and i love the characters sooo much

fun home by alison bechdel 5/5 the way the narrative is presented in this like all the negative space where things arent said but we're supposed to understand its very good

the gilded wolves 3.5/5 i feel like its on me for like. starting this in june 2023 and reading little bits over the year bc i was a bit confused so im gonna try reading this again sometime but it was pretty fun ngl

black leopard red wolf by malon james 3.5/5. i kinda lost where the plot was going about halfway through so this is another book on my reread list but the prose is soooo good that it kept me going

honey girl by morgan rogers 4.25/5 this is about an astrophysicist who has a vegas wedding after she goes out right after getting her phd and is kinda lost in what she wants to do so she strikes up a sort of friendship sort of relationship with her wife from the opposite side of the usa and i found it to be a really nice read

wolfsong by tj klune 4/5 this book is kinda long for what it needs to be tbh and i dont really like the omegaverse enough (its not omegaverse but like. omegaverse's third cousin basically like werewolves and stuff) but i enjoyed the writing style

he who drowned the world by shelley parker-chan 5/5 its the sequel to she who became the sun and i love that zhu has such a good time in this book the second the narrative turns to her its almost a buddy comedy. amazing prose love the world building love the themes love the characters. banger. cant wait to see what shelley parker-chan does next

kemosha of the caribbean by alex wheatle 3.25/5 its about this girl who's a slave in port royal during the golden age of piracy and wins her freedom in a duel and joins a pirate ship as a cook so she can get the money to buy her brother's freedom. i liked it but i think im kinda past ya ig

the aeneid by vergil (cecil day lewis translation) 4/5 oh my goddddd oh my god. amazing. poem of all time

kyoshi duology by fc yee 4.5/5 on one hand i liked it more the first time i read it but like its still good its just ive read some really amazing books since but i love kyoshi and rangi so much and i really like the povs from jianzhu zoryu and yun also

the silmarillion by jrrt 3/5 i did not understand. i will read again im sorry tolkien fans

the mcga trilogy by rick riordan 4/5 this book series was my personality from the release of sword of summer to like two years ago??? on one hand i forgot how much i liked certain elements on the other hands certain elements did not. age well. or weren't good to start with. i feel like rr should like. get a better handle on his narrative arcs tbh

the histories by herodotus (tom holland. not spiderman translation) 4/5 this was very weird but very interesting

the two ministry of unladylike activity books currently out 5/5 this is the sequel series to murder mosr unladylike but about one of the main character's little sisters and her friends outwith the story (which is excellent) i like that it balances showing that the lives of the original characters are still ongoing without going full nostalgia bait

the kane chronicles by rick riordan 4.5/5 outside of the walt and anubis thing (too old to date a Thirteen Year Old jesus christ) very good honestly rr's best series in terms of worldbuilding, characterisation and narrative arcs

the annals by tacitus (yardley translation) 3.25/5 v good translation but holy shit completely boring im sorry im a tacitus hater i fear. interesting historical source tho

lives of the caesar by suetonius (edwards translation) 3.75/5 every single roman emperor is in hell

daughter of the siren queen by tricia levenseller 3.5/5 this could be good but every single romantic scene was punctuated by me saying aloud that i hoped jakey died. i do not remember her boyfriend's name i just do not care. nothing special tbh

the woman of troy by pat barker 4.75/5 this is the sequel to her book the silence of the girls which is a retelling of the iliad from briseis' perspective. this book is still mostly from her perspective but (i believe) a retelling of the troades (i haven't read the troades in english except in summary and i only translated it for like two weeks as a seventeen year old so i forgor but i think it is) i usually hate classical retellings but i like barker's take on things and i just found out (like rn) that theres a third book coming out so im excited about that

the atlas six by olivie blake 2.5/5 this book was written to have out of context parts quoted on tiktok

dictator by robert harris 5/5 this is the finale to his cicero trilogy told through the perspective of tiro whom i love and admire (he probably invented the ampersand and other stuff we use as short hand. everyone say thank you tiro) very good

the eternal ones by namina forna 3.5/5 i really liked the first book in this series and i think i liked the second one too and i think the worldbuilding is compelling but im not interested in any of the characters especially her boyfriend sorry. i liked britta tho. also again i think im kinda past ya rn so

nevermoor graphic novel part two 5/5 i thought the art was beautiful but the story was kinda rushed and one fairly important scene was left out which i was really looking forward too and also messes up some of the relationships which was a shame (unless it got covered in dialogue but i dont speak french i was literally just there for the pictures)

a sky beyond the storm by sabaa tahir 4.5/5 i love the world building so much in this book and i had a really good time with the character development too. i want to reread the series at some point all at once bc i finished boom three in december and i think i forgot some parts lmao

cursed crowns by katherine webber and catherine doyle 2.5/5 this book is stupid. some of the dialogue is funny. like twice

the eagle of the ninth by rosemary sutcliff 3.5/5 if aiglemene in tlt isnt inspired by this in some way (eagles, ninth, leg injury) i will be genuinely surprised. good time

the dawn of yangchen by fc yee 4.25/5 not quite as fun as kyoshi but i found the politics very interesting

whale weekly 4/5 i lost the plot like back in 2022 but the prose is immaculate its so fucking tragic and it was so preventable i love the whole cosmic horror of the whale

amari and the night brothers by bb alston 4.75/5 this has the same vibes as nevermoor but like the main character is looking for her brother and accidentally finds out that shes a magician and also this is a bad thing. kinda cliché but very fun and i had a good time

Honestly….Apollonia>>>>Kay! I agree with you, but I feel that he would only become the way he became if it was Apollonia in the car bombing. I think if it was Calo or whatever he would be like ooh noo back to the USA and then forget about it and live his life with Apollonia. I think Kay would see them together, ask Tom and Tom would tell her. She would definitely become bitter. Apollonia would give Michael beautiful kids and the ending scene of GF3 would be Michael playing with his grandkids 🥺 We would get a lot more (maybe steamy 🤭) scenes of Michael and Apollonia, maybe even a vow renewal scene in GF3! Well I'm gonna be honest with you anon, I hate Apollonia lmao. 💀 And I will respectfully disagree with you.

But without being as biased as possible and coming from reading the book, I believe what Mario Puzo was trying to get across with Michael's character arc and transformation is that Apollonia didn't "change" Michael nor did her death. Sicily didn't change Michael either. Michael had always been the black sheep of the family--the outcast. He was left alone/bugged less by everyone and teased discreetly for a reason. Just like how Fredo and Sonny inherited strong, separate traits from Vito like Fredo's kindness/sweetness and Sonny's brutality, Michael inherited the coldness. Michael was always like that to begin with, it's just that he didn't have the environment or opportunity to show his true colors from the start.

Now you came back from a war and your father almost lost his life because he didn't want to get involved with drugs? Some lowlife is about to start another family war because of this and wants you out of the way? Your brother is the successor, but he's a hot head and only wants carnage to end this? We can't blame Michael for coming out in full force and showing us who he is. If we want to pick who "changed" Michael, then it would only be appropriate to say Vito. In the book, Puzo states Kay is the only person (not even Vito!) who can change Michael and make him act unlike himself, but in the film this is essentially accredited to Vito.

Michael did what he did in the first film before Vito's death for his father and the family. He took the reigns, he had what it takes. Michael was always a cold hearted, calculating bastard. That's why I always recommend/hype up the book because it states in the beginning what kind of a person he is. Getting revenge on Fabrizzio was for himself and his family's honor, not Apollonia. I feel it's way too often forgotten how selfish and cruel Michael is; this is the same person who married a woman for sex and (as stated in the book) kept Apollonia as a sex slave inside for a few weeks.

I don't see Kay as the type to become bitter. I know her heart would break and her rosy worldview she had by Michael's side with his reassurances of no criminality and a promised future to her would devastate her. Michael is no show off, in the US or outside of it. I highly doubt Kay would ever run into Michael and Apollonia together unless she walked straight into their home. Even with Kay, Michael was not the husband who takes his wife out for outings and dinner; just as he barely saw his family and wife in the film afterwards, the same would happen to Apollonia. I just think Apollonia would not express her loneliness and sadness as much as Kay did/does.

I don't at all think Michael remaining married to Apollonia would result in happiness. Michael would ruin her life like he ruined the lives of his kids and the rest of his family, just the way The Godfather Part II played out--with or without Kay. He was far too hell bent on revenge and his enemies (even as Tom stated he was wanting to do too much) to care about anyone except himself. I don't believe Apollonia would ever seek to divorce Michael no matter what due to culture/traditions back then but I think she would end up dying because of the danger surrounding Michael and only he would be to blame.

There is simply no happy ending for Michael or anyone in his family because of Michael's own actions alone. He doesn't even deserve it, if you ask me. He's a horrible person, and that's why at the end of TGF3 he didn't get his happy ending.

But in terms of love, as Mario himself described it, Michael loved two people; his father and Kay. This is what love looks like for Michael. ❤️

i bring this up often but i read this thing about yaoi and the interest younger women/girls have in BL and its fascination with pederasty essentially. this component i think is key when we talk about who gets affected by these things the most. society in general is bad 4 girls bla bla we know lmao but in “more sexually conservative” societies it may be harder for these girls to feel safe even expressing normal emotions romantically and sexually and particularly with guys. some people hypothesized, and i think i agree with this hypothesis, that they can live through the casualness of BL. they don’t feel threatened because they can put themselves into the shoes of the other character. oftentimes, the more feminine or the younger. this was in conjunction with the age gap aspect (they say pederasty as well because there’s unethical age gaps that r gross and that is indeed what we would at least call a touch of sexual abuse if people dont feel like calling it an obsession with youth and power and uhhh young ppl and perhaps kids) where maybe girls could see themselves in these situations as the person being saved, loved, taken care of, and sadly also sexually active and penetrated. 

i think that’s just one aspect of it but i do think there’s validity in who gravitates towards it. i cannot imagine seeing this stuff and not getting enough information as a young kid, i sure as fuck know i didn’t!, and seeing these things and you look at it with 0 critique because you’re young and you may have no interest in it or you simply cannot understand what is wrong. no one is teaching you these things and these shows confirm it. and it is wild how intrinsic patriarchy is to BL although in its existence it also can’t be in line with patriarchy given the nature of two [cis] men!

it begs the question about the replacement aspect. is it just so girls can put themselves in these characters shoes? if so then that means we believe that gender is so interchangeable within our relationships and interactions and that doesn’t seem right. there’s more to lgbtq+ than just existing; it’s finding ways to communicate, finding a family, safety, your people, being a free person. there’s a lot to gain and a lot a lot to lose. and a gay man is also not a woman because those are also two distinct experiences.  especially in societies that have a more hidden aspect to sexuality (idk how to word this bc the BL industry would NEVER survive in america but in a way there’s a more “progressive” look at homosexuality but it’s still fucked up because we live in a Society, you know? at the same time look at what we are doing to trans kids. literally waging war so it’s bonkers how we all collectively have some real progress happening but at the same time not at all. the concept of ‘ladyboys’ and the frequency we see trans people in thai shows is wild and something that we absolutely do not see here in the US. still, none of these groups feel safe or are getting better material conditions in either place. we just show the ways we can try and tolerate oppression witout eliminating it imo)

to me it is clear: it’s money. which most things exist to make money so. but also who is the audience for these shows? and they have to market towards them. all that said all hope is not lost there are some decent shows. it’s just like regular media on TV though where it’s so fucking saturated as an industry that it’s literally sifting through garbage. and there are some days when you can handle the trash and others where it really fucking hurts to watch the violence, the rape, the manipulation, the violations, the stupid messaging. i have never seen more people trying to do mental gymnastics and seeing if things were “technically rape” than in teh BL fandom and that is so fucking sad.

i came into these shows at 28 with almost 0 clue of what as media BL was like esp as media that countries can use as soft power with the revenue. but i realize like...i’m 29 now and so many people don’t have a sizeable, though not huge, amount of life experience. and i wonder for people on the internet who are usually searching for something if they spend so much time on it like what a 15 year old girl thinks. what a 20 year old girl thinks. 

it is incredibly problematic and so awful but there’s also some rewards. if you haven’t i would definitely watch i told sunsset about you which i don’t think i’m going to finish and i doubt i’ll watch the second installment (watch this be a lie) but when i say some fucking impeccable storytelling and art? phew. now that is a fucking piece of media that works. it takes from moonlight heavily and you can see like...the artistic dedication is there and the story makes its world and sets up its stakes extremely well. 

i think because this is marketed towards much younger people too they know they dont have to try as hard. but they SHOULD because then you can have a fucking masterpiece like that. i think even this prolific gay thai filmmaker (who is like solidly against the government) who is so respected (and who i like a lot! if u wanna know i can tell u lmao but the films are very uhhhhhhhh “artsy”) would like i told sunset about you. i wish more people had budget like that and also just cared about the stories. it’s the fucking magic of art to figure out what you can do but there is very little incentive honestly. idk i am very pessimistic. there are days when it’s really a great pick me up and distraction but it is never a place i would love for to feel seen or heard but i’m more of the mind of i never trust the mainstream until they prove me wrong ;)

racism exists in eastern europe. that's a fact, and there was no intent to perhaps imply otherwise by omission. it exists. it affects people.

poland and lithuania are turning away rroma refugees from their borders. black people can get weird comments on the street. the chinese diaspora is practically invisible. racism exists.

but that's it. it simply exists. if one were to excise the racism from, i dunno, moldova, its history and society, it would still be just moldova. this is something we can work towards through education! through preaching tolerance! through penalizing discriminatory behavior!

this does not apply to the west

western europe is as powerful as it is today in no small part because of the colonization of africa and the subsequent slave trade. france still holds colonies and demands reparations for countries that have liberated themselves from it. racism is built into western europe's history, its wealth, and its power.

hell, the united states were established through racism, and look at where they are now. racism is integrated into their laws, their culture, their prison system, their economy; remove the racism from usa and it would cease to exist.

these aren't easily fixable problems because they require deep, ground-up, radical change of many systems, and there's too many people who benefit from these systems as they are for change to be easy.

this is at the core of my argument for why you cannot lump all racism under the sky into one heap - we are not the same, we don't do the same things, we didn't do the same things (we're built different lmao).

yes, there's undoubtedly racism all around, but there isn't one global version of it, and certainly not the kind americans believe.

while it's not *as bad* as treating the entirety of asia or africa as a single monocultural monolith, treating all of europe as a single entity is still a peak Angloamerican Moment

eastern (mostly slavic) europe is culturally, socially, and economically quite distinct from western europe, with the main distinction being that an overwhelming majority of eastern europe never took part in the colonization of africa and asia, which happens to be the sole reason why western europe is economically superior

the reason why eastern european countries are all so white isn't some ~secret racist agenda~ or whatever 'murica wants you to believe, it's because we never had any slaves (black or otherwise) to begin with

by lumping all of europe into one heap of colonialism and imperialism, you're actively erasing the part of europe that fought against it

take yugoslavia, for example, the brightest point of its history was, in fact, enforcing anti-colonialism and aiding colonized countries in liberating themselves or stabilizing afterwards

by ignoring all of this, you get bs such as "slavs are honorary poc" like we're obviously not; you absolutely cannot project the same kind of racial socioeconomic dynamics that angloamerica and western europe currently have (as global powers that colonized and enslaved) onto countries that don't have the same demographics and the same history as them

when horrible earthquakes hit croatia and when mass protests occurred throughout serbia and when the election pandemonium in belarus happened, the overwhelming online response was "who cares about some white europeans, they're all colonizers" which is just... disgusting beyond any measure

tl;dr - to equate western europe, the european union, formerly colonial (and currently neo-colonial) descendants of the habsburg dynasty with eastern europe, who is being politically, economically, and ecologically exploited by the west is the absolute peak of angloamerican privilege on a global scale and main character syndrome (and neither angloamerican white people nor poc are immune to it, you're all the same together in this parade of ignorance)

The Irish + Italians faced racism when large waves first migrated to the USA. jon tron brings up turks and iranians being able to assimilate into a culture than a romanian and hungarian would. If jon tron were knowledgeable to pursue this point, he couldve described how Kurds (an iranian people) and turks often fight and engage in conflict with each other in say, Germany to the dismay of germans who expected these groups to assimilate, forget their animosities from their homeland and become good forklift simulator playing germans.

METAL ASK

1: Favorite subgenre: Ehhhh I dunno, I guess maybe thrash or just traditional NWOBHM type stuff.

2: Black or death?: Black for sure

3: 3 favorite bands: HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA there’s no way I could narrow it down to three

4: 3 least favorite bands: Oh man no idea, I’m sure my least favourite bands would be ones I haven’t heard yet;. Generally if I reeeeally dislike the sound of a band, I won’t seek out any more than a few songs. I tend to just avoid music I dislike. Of course, a lotttt of terrible garbage music comes on the radio, and other people tend to listen to the radio a lot, so occasionally I’m forced to sit through a 24/7 One Direction station or something and silently weep as my ears bleed

5: Thrash metal or grindcore?: Thrash

6: Heaviest song you've ever heard: Shit, I don’t even know. I remember like three years ago when I thought that the opening of SOAD’s “Needles” was the heaviest shit ever lmao, then I heard the breakdown-thing in Suit Pee. Anyway, this is a tough question because I have a line between “this is super heavy” and “this is just kinda...noise at this point”, and it’s difficult to discern where that line is sometimes. Off the top of my head, Nile’s “Lashed to the Slave Stick” is basically the only death metal song I’ve found myself repeatedly listening to, and that song sounds like it weighs 10,000 tons, so we’ll go with that for the moment.

7: 3 overrated bands: Ah man that’s tough. I mean, the two most obvious answers are Nirvana and The Beatles; I do love both those bands, they’re great, and obviously revolutionary (the Beatles almost single-handedly showed people that you could make a living off of writing all your own music instead of covering traditional songs), but I don’t think they’re quite deserving of the worldwide GODLY status. There’s also just certain artists whose success BAFFLES me, like Lil Wayne. The core concept of rap is to RHYME, and I’ve never heard this man form one coherent rhyme lmao

8: Metallica or Megadeth?: Honestly couldn’t choose. Both amazing bands imo

9: Folk metal or viking metal?: Haven’t really listened to enough to form an opinion. I don’t dislike either genre, I just have yet to reeeeeally listen to either.

10: Melodic or technical death metal?: Same as above, haven’t listened to enough to really judge.

11: 3 most 'metal' countries in your opinion: I think just based on the amount of notable metal bands that come out of these places, the USA, Norway, and England win by a landslide.

12: 3 underrated bands: In terms of SUPER obscure bands, Black Death (from Cleveland), Acid (from Belgium), and Brocas Helm. In terms of decently-big-but-not-super-popular, Angel Witch, The Distillers, and Pentagram.

13: What band got you into metal?: Honestly Metallica and SOAD, as generic as that answer is

14: Best guitarist: Speaking from PERSONAL taste, Tony Iommi, Siki Spacek, and Glenn Tipton are favourites of mine.

15: Best drummer: Again, PERSONAL taste, Clive Burr, Dave Lombardo, and Nick Menza.

16: Best vocalist: Personal taste: Rob Halford, Serj Tankian, Danzig, Paul Di’Anno, and Phil Anselmo in his earlier years (pre-tough guy grunting). 

17: Best bassist: Personal taste: Geezer Butler and Steve Harris. Cliff is great but I almost consider him more of a guitarist than a basist with his style

18: Clean vocals or harsh vocals?: Generally somewhere in-between, a nice Hetfieldy shout.

19: 3 bands you just can't get into: In terms of metal, Mastodon and Babymetal (if you have any songs from these two bands that might help me enjoy them, let me know!). Three bands I ALWAYS hear people talk about, but reeeeally can’t get into myself, are Pierce the Veil, Blink-182, and Fall Out Boy. 

20: When did you get into metal?: Maybe three or four years ago

21: Why do you love metal so much?: It’s just a really interesting form of music. Raw aggression taking from more emotionally-driven genres like punk and blues, combined with a lot of impressive instrumentation on a technical level, and the atmosphere of the music and lyrics tends to be pretty cool. I mean, yeah, metal lyrics can be stupid as fuck, but certain bands are poetic in a way that a lot of other genres aren’t.

22: 3 favorite band logos?: Hoth (I haven’t listened to them much but good LORD that logo is cool), Black Sabbath, and of course Slayer (because c’mon, how can you not like it).

23: Fast or heavy?: Generally heavy, but it depends.

24: Favorite NWOBHM band?: Probably Maiden or Angel Witch honestly. Really liking UFO lately too.

25: Favorite black metal band?: REEEEEEALLY generic answers here, but Darkthrone, and Hat-era Gorgoroth.

26: Favorite death metal band?: I have yet to get into death metal enough to really say

27: Favorite thrash metal band?: Eh that’s too difficult to say honestly, I like a lot of thrash. As of right now, I might have to say late 80′s Overkill

28: Glam metal? Yes or no: Good sweet LORD no (95% of the time). The music can be good on rare occasions, but god that look, and those lyrics, EEUGHH

29: 3 most influential metal bands: I’d say Sabbath (obviously, for the creation of metal), Priest (for adding speed, twin guitars, and soaring vocals to metal), and as weird as this is to say, Venom (who single-handedly birthed extreme metal, essentially creating three or four sub-genres). Maiden is another runner-up but I couldn’t put them past the influence of the first three

30: Favorite crossover genre: I mean...I guess blues metal is pretty cool lmao
